The Ramsey Academy Ethos for SEND

The Ramsey Academy, an academy within the Bridge Academy Trust, is an 11-16 comprehensive secondary school which admits students to the school in line with the school’s admission procedure. Our school focus is to ‘Achieve Excellence Together.’  We work hard to support students of all abilities and backgrounds in their educational journey and provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to reach their full potential.

The Ramsey Academy takes a whole school inclusive approach to students with special educational needs. The school recognises that a child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them and, as defined in the 2014 Code of Practice.

Parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns with the SENDCO (Mrs Gerrard), SENDCO Support Officer (Mrs Jones) or Head of Year.  Full details for this guidance and the complaint process, can be found in 2.4 of the SEND information document.

Preventing Less Favourable Treatment of Disabled Students

The Ramsey Academy is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all students and ensuring that disabled students are not treated less favourably than their peers. In line with the Equality Act 2010, we take proactive steps to remove barriers and ensure fair access to education, enrichment, and school life.

To achieve this, the school:

  • Implements reasonable adjustments in line with professional guidance to policies, practices and procedures to ensure disabled students can participate fully in lessons, activities, and wider school life.
  • Provides staff training on disability awareness, inclusive teaching strategies, and the requirements of the Equality Act to ensure all staff understand their duties.
  • Works closely with families and external professionals to identify individual needs early and plan appropriate support.
  • Ensures disabled students have equal access to school trips, clubs, leadership opportunities, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Adapts learning materials and teaching approaches to meet individual needs—for example, through differentiated tasks, assistive technologies, or specialist resources.
  • Monitors progress, wellbeing and inclusion of disabled students to ensure they are fully involved in school life and not placed at a disadvantage.
  • Promotes a culture of respect and understanding through the curriculum, tutor time, assemblies and pastoral programmes to challenge discrimination and foster positive attitudes towards disability.
  • Supports disabled students in transitions between key stages and settings to ensure continuity and inclusivity.

Our commitment to equality and accessibility is reflected in our Accessibility Policy, Equality Statement, SEND Policy and SEND Information Report, which are reviewed regularly.

Facilities to Support Disabled Students’ Access to the School

The Ramsey Academy is committed to providing an inclusive environment in which all students, including those with disabilities, can participate fully in every aspect of school life. We continually review and improve our facilities to ensure accessibility for all.

The school currently provides the following facilities and arrangements to support disabled students:

  • Accessible entrances with level access or ramps to key buildings.
  • Lifts to enable movement between floors where required.
  • Accessible toilets located throughout the school site.
  • Corridors and doorways able to accommodate wheelchair users.
  • Evacuation chairs and personalised emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs) for students with mobility needs.
  • Adjustable-height desks and specialist seating available in classrooms when needed.
  • Specialist equipment, such as hearing-assistance technology or visual-access resources, provided according to individual needs.
  • Modified learning materials (e.g., large-print resources, coloured overlays) for students with visual or processing difficulties.
  • Quiet spaces (Pathway and sensory room) for students with sensory or medical needs.
  • Dedicated support from the SENCO and Learning Support Team to plan and deliver reasonable adjustments.

We continue to enhance our accessibility through our Accessibility Policy, Equality Statement, SEND Policy and SEND Information Report, available on the website, that supports improvements to physical access, curriculum access and communication.

Families are encouraged to contact the school if they wish to discuss their child’s needs or request additional support.

Arrangements for the Admission of Disabled Students

The Ramsey Academy is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all students and ensuring that students with disabilities are not treated less favourably. We welcome applications from disabled students and work to ensure that our admissions procedures do not disadvantage any child.

In line with the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Code of Practice (2015), the school will:

  • Consider all applications from disabled students on the same basis as all other applicants, following the admissions process.
  • Make reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled students can access the admissions process and any transition activities.
  • Work closely with families, previous schools or education provisions, and relevant professionals to understand each child’s needs prior to admission.
  • Review and assess any required adjustments to the school environment, curriculum, or support arrangements to enable the student to participate fully in school life.
  • Ensure that no child is refused admission based on their disability, unless admitting the child would be incompatible with the efficient education of others and no reasonable adjustments could overcome this.

Prospective families of students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the school to discuss their child’s needs and any support that may be required. A copy of our Accessibility Policy, Equality Statement, SEND Policy and SEND Information Report are available on the school website.
